A California judge denied a motion from the California Center for Environmental Health to compel the sale of unleaded avgas (G100UL specifically) throughout the state. He ruled that it is not yet “commercially available” under the terms of a 2014 consent agreement. The court found that G100UL lacks widespread industry acceptance, including from OEMs and trade groups, and noted the absence of an ASTM fuel specification as a key barrier to broader adoption. While G100UL is sold at a handful of airports, the judge deemed it premature to require its use over 100LL given unresolved technical and safety concerns. Industry stakeholders, including NATA, AOPA and others, welcomed the ruling, emphasizing the need for a safe, consensus-driven transition to unleaded fuel by 2030.
